Dungog (map) is a town and local government area (town population circa 2,500). The name is said to be a corruption of an Aboriginal word meaning 'clear hills'.

Dungog Shire is situated in the Barrington Tops region and consists predominantly of very rugged to hilly country that becomes less rugged from north to south. The major population centres within the Shire are Dungog, Gresford, Paterson, Vacy, Martins Creek and Clarence Town. It also includes two main rivers, the Paterson River to the west and the Williams River to the east.
