Pollock Family Tree
< Back

John POLLOCK was born 7/8/1842, at Jugiong, Murrumbidgee, the second son of Robert POLLOCK and Agnes BARBOUR.  Robert and Agnes POLLOCK emigrated from Lochwinnoch, (a village SW of Glasgow) Scotland arriving in Sydney, on the “Portland” on 18/12/1838.  Their first son, Robert was born at sea on 7/12/1838.  There is no record of the birth of their second child, Janet, but they were settled at Jugiong by the time John was born.  The next three children, Mary Ann, Elizabeth & Alexander were born at Jugiong but when James was baptised in December 1849 the family had moved to Araluen.  William was born at Araluen in 1851.  The last three children, David, Margaret and Agnes were born at Brundee where Robert leased a farm on the BERRY estate.  Robert died on 13/3/1864 and is buried at Numbaa Cemetery.  In 1868, Agnes married James ARMSTRONG, who committed suicide by shooting himself on 22/11/1881, at Araluen.  Agnes died on 27/3/1887 and is buried, with Robert and their daughter, Agnes, in Numbaa Cemetery.

Not much is known of John’s early life.  He appears on the electoral roll for 1869/70 as a resident of Terara.  John married Louisa CHYNOWETH, born 1/11/1853, St. Agnes, Cornwall, who arrived, in Sydney, with her mother, & siblings on “Morning Star” on 6/9/1864.  They joined Louisa’s father, Richard CHYNOWETH, who was already a resident at Crown Flat, Araluen.  John & Louisa married at Araluen on 16/7/1873.

On the 18/1/1883 “The Telegraph” at Nowra announced that POLLOCK BROS were in business as cordial manufacturers.  I do not know how many brothers were involved but William and Alexander certainly; John, James & David are possibilities.  Elder brother, Robert, was on the Nambucca at this time although he moved to the Bellinger about the same time that John arrived.  I think whole family was involved in original cordial factory at Nowra. By 1885 John had established cordial factory at Fernmount on James MARTIN’s farm – David was running a branch of Fernmount factory at Woodburn by 1886 - William had a cordial factory at Moruya in 1886 – James and Alexander had original factory at Nowra.   In 1888 Alexander set up his own factory and left POLLOCK BROS.

By 1886 John POLLOCK  was a member of Show Committee, Sports Committee and Starter for Bellinger River Jockey Club.  Raleigh races were held on Mr. James MARTIN’s property.  On 11/10/1889 at Presbyterian Sunday School Picnic at North Beach the children presented Mr. Pollock with a bible.  In 1890 POLLOCK BROS cordial factory was moved to “Pollock’s Hill”. (Junction of Raleigh and Short Cut Roads.)

On 6/12/1898 a meeting was held at Bellingen to set up Co-op Freezing Works with Mr. POLLOCK in the chair.  Provisional Board of Directors elected and in the meeting of the subsequent Bellinger Central Butter Company, held at Fernmount, Mr. POLLOCK was elected one of the Directors.

On 3/8/1899 meeting was called by John POLLOCK of persons desirous of joining Grand United Order of Oddfellows.

On 19/6/1900 Mr. John POLLOCK, J.P. was welcomed on taking his seat on the Bench of Magistrates for the first time.  POLLOCK’s Mineral Waters took leading honours at Metropolitan and Chicago Exhibitions in 1900.

In 1901 John POLLOCK was part of the committee formed to frame By-laws for proposed Cottage Hospital and at a meeting of Hospital subscribers was elected one of the five trustees.

In 1905 the cordial factory moved to new premises in Bellingen and in 1907 a cordial factory was established in Bowraville which was run by Harold HUMPHRIS and his wife Mary Emily POLLOCK, John’s daughter.

In 1907 a presentation was made to John by “Endeavour” Lodge of  I. O. O. F. for 20 years service as Treasurer and in 1914 he had been a member of the local branch of Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows for 31 years.

John POLLOCK died on 19/9/1914, and is buried in the Presbyterian Section of the Bellingen Cemetery.
