Charles Bulwinkle was born in Hanover in 1844 & trained as an engineer in London. He fought in the Maori war after emigrating to New Zealand.

In 1867, the CSR employed Charles to construct their Clarence mills. He married Wilhelmina Laufer from Morpeth in 1874 at Grafton. Charles & Wilhelmina had 3 sons & 8 daughters. In 1884 Charles left the Clarence to manage the Rous sugar mill. In 1882 Charles started farming at Alstonville & he later owned property at Duck Creek.
