David Grant was born in Kent, England. He was 17 years old when he arrived in Melbourne. David gained passage as a cabin boy on a steam ship bound for the north coast of NSW. He settled at Lismore & became a blacksmith's apprentice --- assigned to James Baillie. In 1876 he had saved enough to bring his mother, 2 brothers & 2 sisters to join him in Australia.. In 1979 David Grant opened his own Blacksmith Shop in Ballina. Grant was a strong advocator of the township of Ballina. In 1866 he became Auditor to the Municipality of Ballina. In 1890, David was forced to leave Ballina due to ill-health. He moved to Perth in 1890.

It is believed that Grant Street may have been named after David Grant.
