Denis & Winifred Hartigan came from Innes, County Clare, Ireland in 1880. They brought their first four children with them: Bridget (Mrs Dan Walsh), Margaret (Mrs Richard Holmes), Mary (Mrs Joseph Holmes) & Michael. Another son, Denis was born in 1882.

Prior to emigration, Denis senior was an active member of the 'Land Leaguers' & was, until his death, an activist in the struggle for 'home rule' in Ireland.

In Denis junior's early days he was a road contractor. He later met & married Margaret Ann Baxter of Boundary Creek on 30th June 1913 in Lismore. Denis & Margaret had 5 children: Margaret Francis (Mrs Len Webster of Canberra), Agnes Mary (Mrs Lou Chiandet of Ayre, Qld), Mary Ellen (1918 - 1918), Francis Denis (1922) & Thomas Joseph (1924). Thomas died 9th July 1980.

Denis junior played a very active part in sport. He was president of the Irish National Association. Denis was prominent in the NSW Cane Growers' Association & served in many of the executive & delegate positions.
